Psalms (40:10) we read: "I...

In Psalms (40:10) we read: "I have not had thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation." Christian Science is a religion of joy, and in humble gratitude I wish to tell of the great good which the study of this Science has brought to me.

My earliest recollection of Science is that of seeing lecture notices posted outside of our local high school in New Jersey which read, "Free Christian Science Lecture." I never attended one, however, because none of my family or friends ever did. When I was older and began to work, I moved to Pennsylvania. Here I first heard kind words about Christian Science. An osteopathic physician, a woman, spoke to me reverently about Christian Science. I was so deeply impressed that I borrowed the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from a Reading Room and read it through. The testimonies interested me particularly. The problem of incurable illnesses in the world had been a great burden to me and had troubled me deeply, but after reading the Christian Science textbook, I was comforted. I thought happily, "If I ever get anything incurable, I can get rid of it in Christian Science." That was the only light that penetrated when I first read the textbook, but it was a vital message.

Two years later, in 1929, as the result of an accident I did have an incurable condition. For a year I had worn a steel belt and had tried every known way to get well. At the end of the year I understood that it was thought I could never expect to recover completely. I was not distressed by this state of affairs because I knew that Christian Science heals incurable conditions. I began to study, and in five weeks I was able to discard the steel belt, but it was about a year before the healing was complete. At that time I had one treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, and then all was well. I had never been very strong, but after the complete healing my health was better than it had ever been. The strength and freedom of unrestricted physical activity was glorious, and this wonderful joy has never left me. This healing was completed over eighteen years ago and has been permanent.
