BRIGHT SHINING
Do not disdain the penitential tears.
They help to bring
The bright shining after the storm clears.
"Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied,"
Could Peter say, and he could well thank God
For being begotten into a lively hope
By Jesus' resurrection from the dead.
Do not forget the sad and bitter tears
That followed hard upon the "I know him not."
Through that remorse and through those very tears
A broadening of thought was possible.
The full savor of the resurrection morning.
Divine bliss in the ascension's glory,
The comprehension of the Pentecost,
Transfiguration understood in retrospect.
And through that purified and broadened thought
There flowed the warm and tender Christly power
That drew three thousand penitents,
Mourning their cold aloofness at the cross,
All in one day into the church's fold.
Do not resist the penitential tears.
Let them bring
The bright shining after the storm clears.
