THE JOY OF MAINTAINING SPIRITUAL FACTS
"Maintain the facts of Christian Science,—that Spirit is God, and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is Mind, acting through spiritual law. Then hold your ground with the unshaken understanding of Truth and Love, and you will win." These statements by Mary Baker Eddy occur in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 417), under the marginal heading "Helpful encouragement." If we would be successful demonstrators of this truly Christian Science, it is necessary constantly to maintain the fundamental facts of Life in our thinking. We cannot afford to accept fable or false evidence concerning individuals, groups, or nations; and the ability to distinguish between that which is factual and that which is fictitious is attained as we progress in our understanding of reality.
As we look upon earth's scene today with its uncertainty, materialism, doubt, and distrust, the tragic aftermath of the last war, it is essential, if we would aid in healing these errors, to replace such negative concepts with positive, divine realty. We know that in reality there is only the universe of spiritual ideas expressing the oneness, satisfaction, and completeness of divine Mind. This great fact gives the lie to error's claim of many nations composed of multiple persons with differing aims and ideologies, each vying with the other in a futile attempt to maintain a false sense of existence. Let us ever be so aware of the divine facts of being that false presentments of evil cannot disturb, discourage, or deceive, us, but are immediately consigned to their native nothingness.
In distinguishing between that which is factual and that which is false we find the words of our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, most significant and practical (Matt. 5:37), "Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." Surely his ability at all times quickly to discern spiritual facts caused him to agree with the only truth that is and disagree with every phase of error or false evidence that confronted him, with the result that healing took place and harmony was restored. To the extent that we are consistently imbued with spirituality and are ever mindful of that which bears witness to Truth, we too can reject as powerless, baseless, and therefore nonexistent the testimony of material sense whenever, wherever, and by whomsoever expressed. Error, in the light of Truth, is always unworthy, fraudulent, unreal, and can be disposed of as such.
