In 1936 I underwent a major operation which left me in a weakened, despondent, and nervous condition. At this time Christian Science was brought to my attention, and I turned wholeheartedly to it. Through the reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was healed of the above-mentioned condition. Healings of many other troubles followed, including a serious gall bladder condition, what appeared to be a broken bone in my right hand occasioned by a bad fall, colds, grippe, periodical digestive upsets, a very disturbing type of nightmare, and many other painful and distressing difficulties the names of which I do not know.
Some of these healings were brought about through the work of practitioners, some through my own understanding of Truth, and some with no specific work at all being done. The nightmares had troubled me from childhood. After studying Christian Science for some time. I was enabled to apply its rules while in the midst of one of these attacks and gain instant relief. Sometime later, although no further work was done, I realized that I was entirely free of this condition. Our Leader says in Science and Health (p. 250), "Now I ask, Is there any more reality in the waking dream of mortal existence than in the sleeping dream?" Of course, the answer is "No," and this passage has been greatly illuminated for me since that experience.
The healing which is most precious to me is the overcoming of resentment. This error took months, even years, to conquer, and many lessons had to be learned. The story of Jacob wrestling with the angel was very helpful. It convinced me that I must persevere until every phase of aggressive suggestion was eradicated and I could honestly say: "God created man in His own image and likeness. My neighbor is that man and so am I, and I know it, continuously and positively." Our Leader says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 118), "Be of good cheer; the warfare with one's self is grand; it gives one plenty of employment, and the divine Principle worketh with you,—and obedience crowns persistent effort with everlasting victory." This statement I have been able to prove, and when the healing came, I received a blessing indeed, because a great weight was lifted from me and I had gained a truer picture of my fellow man and thus of my Father-Mother God.
