THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Beth and her little brother, John, enjoyed going to the Christian Science Sunday School. Though they lived twenty miles from the big city where the Christian Science church was, they were in their places in Sunday School early every Sunday morning. Mother never had to say, "Hurry, it is getting late!" because they were ready before Mother was.

Beth and John both loved the hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal, especially Mary Baker Eddy's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14). They knew all the words to "Shepherd" so that they could sing it without the book.

Of all the Bible stories their teacher told them, Beth loved best the one about Paul and Silas (Acts 16:16–34). These men, who were Christians, were put into prison and their feet fastened in the stocks to keep them from getting away. But at midnight they sang hymns of praise to God, and prayed, and a wonderful thing happened: "Every one's bands were loosed." Their teacher said, "We can sing, too, when error tempts us to be scared, because we know that God is good and is the only power."
