A new song

The dark was very dark. We struggled long.
Groping in despair I sought to find
A blade, a source of strength. There came to mind
A saying: "Sing unto the Lord a song,
A new song."

No better blade than this? I cast aside
The offered arms. The songs I knew that told
Of God as Love, good and kind, were old
To me. I could not sing, not if I tried,
A new song.

Turning back to battle with the foe,
I found him gone, and God and I alone!
Repeating songs of truth already known
Had won. The peace and joy that came were, lo—
A new song!
