Dwelling in Love's Atmosphere
In considering the counterfeit material universe which mortal mind believes is its limited and often uncomfortable dwelling place, one may find himself visualizing the sphere we call the earth whirling about in space, enveloped in a nebulous and more or less invisible gaseous shroud frequently referred to as the atmosphere. A dictionary defines "atmosphere," physically considered, as "the whole mass of air surrounding the earth."
Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, thoroughly understood the unreality from the standpoint of divine Science of this "mass of air surrounding the earth." Indeed, she writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 293), "The material so-called gases and forces are counterfeits of the spiritual forces of divine Mind, whose potency is Truth, whose attraction is Love, whose adhesion and cohesion are Life, perpetuating the eternal facts of being."
There is a great difference between this mixture of material gases, which are but counterfeits of the spiritual forces, and the true atmosphere of Spirit, the atmosphere of divine Love, in which man, God's image and likeness, lives, and moves, and has his being. While this so-called material atmosphere, or air as we usually call it, is of an attenuated and impalpable nature, being generally invisible, tasteless, and odorless, it is nevertheless matter which, according to the claims of mortal mind, may under certain conditions have a harmful influence on human existence.
