Meeting the Human Need

One day a telephone call came from a stranger who said that a friend of his, who was both blind and crippled, had had a loan of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy in Braille, and had gained much good from reading it. But, he explained, this copy had been needed by another Braille reader, and his friend was missing his daily study of Christian Science. He wondered if the Reading Room could do anything.

We learned that the one for whom he was calling had been studying Christian Science diligently for about a year. Through a generous friend of Christian Science, the textbook in Braille was presented to him as a gift, together with a year's subscription to the Christian Science Quarterly in Braille.

This man was so thirsty for Truth, and so grateful for the help that had been given him in his search for freedom, that when he received the Quarterly containing the Lesson-Sermons he stayed up all that night and read not only the current Lesson, but every Lesson in the book! He came to the Reading Room later to express his unbounded gratitude. (Note: The Herald of Christian Science, Braille Edition, is also available to Reading Rooms and individuals on subscription.)
