Jesus said (John 14:12), "Verily,...
Jesus said (John 14:12), "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;" and (John 8:31, 32), "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Through the study of Christian Science we see clearly that these words spoken by Jesus are meant for all time and for all mankind. Christian Science reveals to us the healing power of the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3). It is a great joy to me to have been led to study this Science. I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her courage in standing firm against great opposition and for giving to this age the healing power of Truth which Jesus taught and demonstrated.
I have had many wonderful proofs of the all-power of God in my journey Spiritward. One day as I tried to stop my dog from dashing through an open doorway, I caught my finger on the edge of the doorpost, and a long, thick piece of wood broke off and wedged itself far down under the nail. This became very painful, and I was urged to go to the doctor to have the splinter removed, for I found it was too firmly fixed to remove it myself. I decided, however, to turn entirely to God and sought help from a Christian Science practitioner. It meant standing very firmly against the fear which was being expressed by those around me.
The finger became more and more painful and seemed to be gathering. The words from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive," came very clearly to me; and in less than two days, although the wood still remained in the same position, all pain vanished, the discharge stopped, and I had no more trouble with the finger. A few weeks later I touched the tip of the wood and found it had become loose, and I was then able to draw it out without any pain. This was a lovely proof that Truth does remove "whatever is offensive," when we truly rely on God's all-power.
I am deeply grateful too for a wonderful healing of periodic deafness. For many years I had felt it necessary to go to the doctor about every six months when I became deaf. I tired many times to rely on God alone when these periods of deafness occurred, for I had a great desire to turn away from material remedies, but always in the end I felt it necessary to resort to the old method. The last time this difficulty appeared, the desire was very great to turn only to God, and I asked a practitioner for help. During this treatment I was given a wonderfully clear concept of man's real being as an idea of God, made in His image and likeness, perfect, whole, and free from the material dream. My thought was lifted above materiality. I realized more clearly than ever before that we do not look to matter to see if Truth will work. I was reminded that even before the healing took place Jesus said (John 11:41), "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me." He did not wait for the material picture to change before giving thanks for the raising of Lazarus. Jesus recognized only the the real man, in God's image and likeness, free from all claims of matter. My thought was absolutely healed. I did not think any more about the material condition. Even though the deafness still persisted, it did not worry me at all. In a very short time the healing was complete in every way, for I found I could hear perfectly. This experience has taught me that we must turn our thought away from matter and give thanks, as Jesus did, that God's creation is forever perfect. The healing has been permanent.
I am grateful for the blessing of Christian Science to the world. It is a joy to be a member of The Mother Church and also of a branch church, and so to be able in little ways to serve God in this great Cause.—(Miss) Florence Marian Fletcher, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
