Uplifting Consciousness

During my recent service as an aviator there was usually a small percentage of the men in the group to which I was assigned who were "grounded," that is, temporarily or permanently considered not qualified to carry out their aerial duties owing to some inharmonious physical or temperamental condition.

Have we not all at various times felt that we were "grounded" in some human activity by having accepted the temptation to lend an ear to mortal mind's suggestions that we were in some way limited, confined, or unqualified to carry on? Unless one understands that man, as the son of God, is spiritual, always reflecting Him in right activity, placed and conditioned by Him, he is not equipped to demonstrate his dominion over inharmonious conditions. The Bible admonishes (Isaiah 52:2), "Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion." In other words, we must awake from the belief that we are dominated by matter or restricted by any set of circumstances and by so doing we shall become aware that only God and His perfect creation are present. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, this truth is reiterated. For example, on page 421 she writes as follows: "Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God. Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him."

Mankind must loosen and ultimately completely sever the mortal bonds that seem to entangle it by rejecting them on the basis of their unreality and powerlessness. As this is done, the human concept of man with which we seem to be so familiar will be replaced with Mind's idea. The eternal perfection of man, the spiritual idea of God is for each individual to apprehend and demonstrate in his experience. Nothing can withstand the power of a consciousness illumined by the Christ, the true idea of God and man, or prevent it from rising above the human sense of existence. Assured of this truth, our Leader writes (ibid., p. 505), "Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth."
