For years I attended an orthodox church and Sunday School and was taught that God sent sickness, and that I should accept it because it was His will. This brought no satisfaction or joy into my life, and so for a long time I was indifferent to religion. Then when I became very ill and was harassed by a business problem, someone recommended that I try Christian Science, but I replied that I did not want religion, that I wanted health.

A copy of the Christian Science textbook. Science and Health, was lent to me for a few days, and passages referring to climate were pointed out. I believed that in order to regain the health I had enjoyed for a few months while in England, it was advisable for me to go back there to live. I then bought a copy of the textbook and read it daily. This brought a measure of peace. I began to see that it was impossible for a God of love to send sickness, pain, or sorrow. I glimpsed the fact that God's presence is everywhere, and that I cannot be anywhere without God's being there. The illness and depression were overcome by the healing power of Christian Science.

The first proof I had of God's nearness came while I was driving with two others in a dogcart on a country road. The horses became frightened and went over a bank. We were all thrown heavily to the ground, and the cart was turned upside down. My first thought was that God was right where we were. Nothing seemed to matter but God's presence with us. This realization was very clear to me, and neither we nor the horses were seriously hurt, nor was the cart damaged.
