The sustaining, protecting, and...
The sustaining, protecting, and guiding influence of Christian Science during the three years I spent in the Air Corps conclusively proved to me that God's love is everywhere available. In August of 1944, I was sent on a bombing mission over the heart of Germany. My plane was hit by antiaircraft fire, and the crew was forced to bail out. Before pulling my rip cord, while falling through space. I closed my eyes and thanked God for the protection He was giving me. Since God fills all space and His arms are around and underneath I knew that His love would dissipate the seeming power of the human hatred that would harm me.
My thoughts also dwelt on the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 139: 7-10): "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea: even there shall thy hand lead me and thy right hand shall hold me." I landed safely, though coming down through and brushing high-tension wires.
"Remember." writes Mary Baker Eddy in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 149, 150), "thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." Love's tender lesson was waiting for me in the prisoner-of-war camp, and it proved to be an impressive and invaluable experience for which I am sincerely grateful. Here I found a group holding Christian Science services, and I had my first real opportunity to study and read all the way through the Bible, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and all our Leader's other works, a chance to take stock and see how vital a part Christian Science was playing in my life.
