Twenty-six years ago I attended...
Twenty-six years ago I attended my first Christian Science service with no thought of becoming a student of this religion, much less a member of the church. Then many disappointments and a great feeling of depression caused my heart, like the Psalmist's, to cry out for the living God. Ten years elapsed, however, before I decided to investigate Science. Though I had been a member of an orthodox church since childhood, it had failed to meet my need. Loving friends recommended that I give Christian Science a trial, which I willingly did. Immediately I realized that I had found the "pearl of great price."
In Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 322) we read, "The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love." Today my heart overflows with joy and gratitude to God for the privilege of being a student of Science, and for the opportunity of studying daily the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook.
Many inharmonious conditions and experiences have been worked out through the study and application of the truth. Several years ago I contracted a severe case of ptomaine poisoning. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and we won a victory over it through radically relying on God and understanding the truth as stated in Genesis 1:31, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." A chronic case of constipation with many accompanying ills has been healed without direct effort. Our Leader avers in her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (p.9), "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." An injured ankle and seasonal throat ailments vanished when Science was properly applied.
One day my hands went through an overhead windowpane and were severely cut on the jagged glass. On turning wholly to God, however, and realizing that God's man can never come in contact with any material object. I was able to go about my daily tasks. Lost objects have been restored stored and the comfort, peace, and protection which are mine pass human understanding. Needed growth has come with each healing.
The periodicals have proved to be a great blessing to our home, and the reading of the testimonies of healing found therein has often lifted my thinking above the mists of error, doubt, and fear. Words could never express my thanks to God for our dear Saviour, who came to show us the way and for Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Membership in The Mother Church, sharing in the activities of a branch church, and class instruction are blessed privileges. In the words of our Leader (Science and Health, p. 174): "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised."—(Mrs.) Irene V. Wilbert, Los Angeles, California.
