Trusting Love's Care
[Of Special Interest to Children]
"Let's talk about the names for God," said Nancy as she and her big sister Anne curled up on the sofa before the fire after supper. Nancy liked to discuss what she had learned in Sunday School. "You start, Anne!"
"Well, first of all there's Principle." began Anne. "You know our Leader says it includes all the other names for God. You and I and Daddy and Mummy and all." she went on making a large circle with her arms, "are governed by divine Principle."
"And Principle is Love!" added Nancy eagerly. "And all God's children express or reflect Love. And the bible says (Acts 17:28). 'In him we live, and move, and have our being.'"
"This means that divine Principle, Love, always cares for us and gives us all good." agreed Anne. Then she talked about another name for God and the girls went on taking turns, while the fire crackled and the logs dropped apart as they burned through. Pretty soon Mother called to Nancy that it was bedtime, and the sisters happily said good night.
The next morning Mother was getting breakfast when the telephone rang, and Nancy answered it. "It's the man from the city. Mother, and he says this is the day he must have your picture. Oh, Mum that means you will be gone all day! "
The man from the art gallery was ready to hang Mother's latest painting in an exhibit. But instead of being happy about this, Nancy felt very sad. Whenever Mother went to the city it meant that Nancy must take her lunch to school and eat it all alone, for all the other girls lived nearer school than she did so they did not take their lunches unless they had arranged to do so beforehand.
When Mother hung up the telephone, Nancy began to tell her forlornly how unhappy she felt about eating lunch all by herself.
"Why, Nancy dear," said her mother gently, "you are acting as though God does not always take care of you and is not always with you, supplying through His love your every need!" Nancy listened. "It's God's law that you are always in His care, and if you need companionship, you will have it," Mother went on. "But that is not primarily what you need. Your real need is to trust God!"
"Oh. Mother, of course," nodded Nancy, smiling back at her." I know Love is everywhere, and I do live in Love! So I can't be lonely with Love taking care of me!" And she hurried off to pack her lunch box.
"Now remember," said Mother, as Nancy kissed her good-by after breakfast, "God's love always surrounds you. You only need to trust Him! "
"Oh, yes." said Nancy; "and Mother, it's so nice to trust God that I don't care if I eat alone."
That evening a radiant Nancy greeted her mother. "Mummy, what do you think! Ella May, who's in my Sunday School class, brought her lunch today too, and she was so glad I had brought mine! I told her what you said about God always taking care of us and she had been thinking of the words on the Sunday School wall (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 494). 'Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.' Mother, it was fun to have lunch with Ella May, because she is one of the nicest girls in school, but it was wonderful to find that Love cares for us all the time!"
"I know! " Mother said. "When we are willing to trust God we are certain to see proof of His constant care." And then she read from their much-loved textbook, Science and Health (p. 574). "The very circumstance which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive. Love can make an angel entertained unawares."
"I was happy right away," said Nancy, "when I began to trust God, because I knew only good could come from Him."
