The Magdalen
"Surely,"
said Simon, Simon the Pharisee,
"If this man were a prophet, he would know
The woman is a sinner."
So with his cold
Analysis he saw her, diagnosed her sins,
And held himself averted, missing quite
The glory and the vision of her healing.
And what of Jesus? How did Jesus know her?
See how his meekness flows to greet her own,
Discerns the purity in her affection,
Salutes the courage of her coming to him.
What tender penetration pierces through
The outward seeming to the child of God.
Teach us, dear Father, not as the Pharisee,
But as the Master, prophetically to see.
