Overcoming Self-Consciousness

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

"Oh, I wish I could readily express what I know; I am always so self-conscious," was the despairing cry of a young pupil. Had he realized his true selfhood as God's spiritual and perfect idea according to the gracious teachings of Christian Science, he would have manifested peace and poise under every circumstance.

Welcome release from the mesmerism of self-consciousness has come to many through the revelation of the Christ-teaching given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It explains why our great Exemplar, Christ Jesus, was never ill at ease. He knew his forever oneness with his Maker to be an ever-present fact and proved the power of spiritual understanding.

Man has but one true purpose in life—to express God. He is the loved child of the divine creator, who has given him dominion over all the earth. God being "the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal" (ibid., p. 587), it must follow that man possesses by reflection the unchanging, perfect poise of Principle. He is the individualized expression of that Mind which knows no fear, doubt, or confusion, and which is forever free from every enslaving belief of mortal mind.
