My first contact with Christian Science...

My first contact with Christian Science came when I enrolled my son in the Sunday School. He had not found satisfying answers to his questions when attending elsewhere, but his very first gleanings in the Christian Science Sunday School made such a deep impression upon him that he encouraged his chum to attend with him. Both have since become members of The Mother Church and have served, one at the Benevolent Association Sanatorium at Chestnut Hill and the other at the Christian Science Publishing House in Boston.

The evidence of spiritual progress on the part of these young men aroused my interest to the extent that I attended an occasional Sunday service. This soon led to frequent reading from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and later to regular study and church attendance. Within a short time I was interested in church membership. I soon learned that certain work must be done before I would be ready to take this step. Smoking, self-pity, jealousy, temper, and a sense of limitation would have to be overcome.

About this time I was privileged to type an article entitled "Instantaneous Healing," which later appeared in The Christian Science Journal of August, 1944. While doing this work, I saw the truth so clearly that I was freed to a considerable degree of these difficulties, with the exception of smoking. Despite the blessing I had received, I was fearful that I should always be enslaved to the tobacco habit. Shortly thereafter I asked a practitioner for help. But before he gave a treatment he read and carefully explained to me the reference on page 407 (line 3) of the textbook, and also the second verse from I John 3, laying special emphasis on the fact that we are the "sons of God" right now—not tomorrow or next year. The impression made upon my thought is still so vivid that I feel each Sunday, as I hear the Bible statement read at the close of the service, that much needed healing is then and there available to anyone who will open his thought to it. I was completely healed in the one treatment. Neither the fear nor the desire ever returned.
