I am grateful for the opportunity...

I am grateful for the opportunity which I have had during the past fifteen years of serving the Cause of Christian Science through the activities of a branch church. For the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for class instruction, and for the opportunity of sharing all the blessings that have come to me through Christian Science with my fellow church members, I thank God.

Christian Science came to me about fifteen years ago when I was in the depths of despair. I was in a hopeless condition, physically ill, discouraged, hopelessly addicted to drugs, and a slave to tobacco and alcohol. I had been stricken with a disease diagnosed by physicians as "paralysis of the central nervous system," which deprived me of the use of the muscles in my hands and feet. As for the pain, there was no relief day or night, since narcotic drugs had been used so long that they were no longer effective.

Upon consulting one physician after another and finding no relief or promise of relief, I became utterly despondent. It was while I was in the throes of despair and pain that Christian Science came to me "with healing in [its] wings."
