Our Vocation

The Rev. Peter Kenneth Emmons The Christian Advocate, Chicago, Illinois

It is high time that all of us should come to think of our job as our "vocation," a call from God to enter into sacred partnership with Him in meeting the world's needs and building the kingdom of God on earth....

Perhaps, as an illustration. I may be pardoned for referring to my own father. Father was the blacksmith in a little New Jersey village. He never went very far in formal education, but I can still see him standing at his forge with some passage of Scripture or some poem written on a piece of paper fastened on a nail just at his eye level on the chimney of the forge. He was sleeping his mind in holy thoughts, feeding his soul on eternal truth, while he waited for an iron to heat. If anyone in the neighborhood had a problem or a sorrow or a burden of sin and shame, he would come to "the village blacksmith," for he knew that there was a man of God who would help if he could.
