Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Wartime Activities

[From a Friend in France]

About a month ago I received the prose writings of Mary Baker Eddy, in four volumes, besides the Manual of The Mother Church. Each book had an inset indicating that it was a gift from the "international Distribution Fund of The First Church of Christ. Scientist." A Christian Science Hymnal (containing words only) was also enclosed in the shipment.

I had written my brother asking him to thank you for me. Today—a little late, no doubt—it occurs to me it is right for you to receive direct thanks from me.

As for so many, Christian Science, which is the Comforter, has become my counselor, my physician, my hope, my life. Wherever I have met Christian Scientists they have been enlightened and sincere friends, and never in vain have I asked for counsel and help. During this war all the members of my family have passed through very severe trials. Two of my brothers and myself were deported to concentration camps in Germany. However, I have always prayed with confidence, as we are taught in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, and on my return I have had the immense joy of finding that my family had escaped the most extreme dangers. I can never be grateful enough to the Christian Science organization and its Founder, Mrs. Eddy whose teachings are so needed for the life and happiness of men. You can therefore appreciate my joy when I received "Miscellaneous Writings" and the other works by our revered Leader, in which there are such divinely inspired counsels for each step forward.
