Good Alone Is Real. Full Stop!
Few indeed are the students of Christian Science who, sooner or later, do not find themselves confronted with the age-old question, "If God is infinite good, where does evil come from?" If assured by an older student that, in truth, evil never did appear as reality, the rejoinder is invariably, "But how can an infinitely good God permit it even to appear to exist?" The unspeakable horrors and cruelties which have accompanied the nightmare of war pose a question difficult for the votaries of many creeds to answer.
Most thinkers are agreed that iniquity cannot be laid at the door of Him who is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13). However, instead of taking the stand that since Truth never made error, error has no real existence, many people may interpose a "but." "But yet," say they, "we certainly seem to see and suffer from evil. How can you say it is unreal?"
Here one is reminded of a delightful remark of one of Shakespeare's characters. Protesting another's use of the phrase, "but yet," he says,
