A beautiful proof of God's guidance and protecting care demonstrated in Christian Science came under my observation a few years ago, when I had contracted to build a new home for another Christian Scientist. The lot upon which the house was to be built was chosen only after much consideration and prayerful thought had been given the matter. This location was the only suitable one in the vicinity for the purpose.

Owing to the fact that the lot was a filled one, it was necessary to design a different foundation from that commonly used. I had procured the services of one of the best foundation engineers in the city. His decision was to use what is known as pier and girder construction.

When the dwelling was started, three test holes were drilled on various parts of the site. To our amazement, instead of reaching solid ground, we hit an oil-bearing sand, not unlike thick molasses. This presented a serious problem, because it meant that the type of construction adopted, which was one approved by the Federal Housing Administration, could not be used. A new plan had to be found, and it would also have to have the approval of the F. H. A. Meantime, the F. H. A. loan had already been approved, the permit granted, and all the rough lumber and building materials were on the ground. I called in the engineer to help us out of this situation. On looking over the condition, he told me he did not see how it could possibly be any worse.
