Greater Individual Demonstration

Many years ago the master Christian, Christ Jesus, sent forth his disciples with the following injunction (Matt. 10:8): "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." That Jesus intended this command to apply to all is evident when we recall his words (John 14:12), "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."

Nearly two thousand years later, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, admonished (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 317): "The hour has struck for Christian Scientists to do their own work; to appreciate the signs of the times; to demonstrate self-knowledge and self-government; and to demonstrate, as this period demands, over all sin, disease, and death."

These two commands are indeed a challenge to each one of us as a Christian Scientist. Both of these inspired teachers realized that without works, words are dead and meaningless, and that the growth of pure Christianity depends on the demonstration of each individual and not upon the healing done by a select few. This was borne out by the decline in the early Christian church when the healing ministry became dwarfed by ritual and creed.
