Christian Science found me...
Christian Science found me "down under," not only geographically, but also according to the standards of mortals.
My first moral healing was of the tobacco habit, and took place during my early sessions with the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This reading showed me that I must be consistent: I had either to put away that book and go on with the pipe, or put away the pipe and go on with the book. Obeying the higher thought, I continued reading steadily for about two hours. Then, reaching out for the pipe, I discovered that not the slightest desire to smoke remained in thought. Tobacco has not been used by me since this healing, which occurred many years ago and has been permanent.
Several times in the succeeding years I had desired to be healed of the need of wearing glasses. I used to take them off only to put them on again, rather than endure a sense of discomfort, strain, and irritation. While I was in Boston in 1936 I took them off once more, and have never worn them since. I proved that they were unnecessary during an educational, scenic, and historic tour of the United States and Canada. The tour necessitated my driving a car. The territory was new to me, and road maps had to be studied and used. In my metaphysical work, each day the thought came that the journey was mental, not physical; that man's activity is in divine Mind, not in matter. A statement in Science and Health (p. 426) proved a constant daily help, "When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress."
