"The substance of all devotion"

It is clear that the Apostle John was attracting the attention of the disciples to the love that is free from personality when he wrote (I John 4:16), "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." Similarly Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 241). "The substance of all devotion is the reflection and demonstration of divine Love, healing sickness and destroying sin."

As the infinite love of God dawns upon the human consciousness, it dispels the sense of personal love. The evangelization of the human self makes it possible for us to reflect the divine qualities and nature. The good that results from the pure reflection of Mind is but a sign following.

On page 21 of "Pulpit and Press," another of her writings. Mrs. Eddy says. "Christian Scientists, their children and grandchildren to the latest generations, inevitably love one another with that love wherewith Christ loveth us; a love unselfish, unambitious, impartial, universal,—that loves only because it is Love." Divine Love does not depend upon persons or circumstances for expression. Love is God and man is the image of Love, and in the measure that this spiritual fact is understood and demonstrated, is divine Love evidenced in human consciousness.
