I am grateful to God that I have...
I am grateful to God that I have learned of Christian Science with its practicality and demonstrability. When we first learn the multiplication table we may have to take for granted that two times two is four, and so forth, but as we progress we understand that it is true, and we prove it by getting the right answer every time. The same reasoning applies to our simple steps in healing. We build on faith, and as we progress our understanding increases. Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, states on page 297 of the Christian Science textbook, "Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has little relation, to the actual or divine."
I am grateful for the healing of pleasure in smoking. When I started going to college I felt that, like the others, I must smoke to enjoy life. For ten years I was under that mesmeric belief. All this time I continued reading the Bible and Science and Health and attending Sunday School and church. I pondered what Mrs. Eddy says about smoking. I quit smoking a while, but went back to it because it still seemed enjoyable. The suggestion came that if it was a pleasure it could not be wrong.
One night while up in a mountain cabin I was declaring the truth about God and man, and the nothingness of error in the form of a cold. I pondered again the matter of smoking. Then the thought occurred to me that I could not imagine Jesus indulging in this practice. How foolish and impossible it seemed! That was the healing of my false pleasure, and I have not touched tobacco since. This healing took place twelve years ago.
