I wish to tell of some demonstrations of Christian Science made during the fighting in the last war. These proofs have strengthened the seeds of faith that had been sown in my thought some years before the war.

I have spent five years in the Canadian Army, eighteen months of which were spent with an infantry regiment in the Italian campaign. One morning before dawn our company, in reserve on an attack, dug in along a road. An enemy machine gunner pinned us in our trenches for three hours. During that period I read and pondered upon two or three articles in the Christian Science Sentinel, a copy of which I nearly always carried with me. The attack failed momentarily, and we were ordered to withdraw. We all stood up, waited for a company from another regiment to pass, and then moved out ourselves. Not a shot was fired.

The following night our company carried out one of the great coups of the campaign. I had many "close ones." but unceasingly I prayed that I might have the understanding of God's protection. Midst furious shelling, which included a three-hour barrage by our own artillery, I was soothed and steadied. We were by that time in houses on our objective territory, with the enemy all around. He was completely unnerved, and the result led to a decisive victory for the whole Canadian Corps.
