One Universal Family

Christian Science brings to the human race the understanding that there is one universal family, the Christianly scientific ideal of one Father-Mother God, Spirit, and the one infinite family of perfect spiritual ideas. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 22): "God is over all. He alone is our origin, aim, and being. The real man is not of the dust, nor is he ever created through the flesh; for his father and mother are the one Spirit, and his brethren are all the children of one parent, the eternal good."

It may be confidently stated that, as this spiritual concept of one universal brotherhood is understood, family groups will be strengthened and rendered more useful. The everyday concept of family often results in domination or lack of control through a false material sense of possessive parenthood and sonship, and a subsequent rupture of harmonious family relationships.

A right understanding of universal, spiritual brotherhood, on the other hand, enables men to work in unified, co-operative, and constructive family and community groups, where harmony, peace, and good will usher in a foretaste of heaven. Any unit of individuals inspired with this ideal of brotherhood can become a potent influence for good in a community, in all of the daily activities and relationships of its members, and can present to mankind an illustration of true Christian co-operation.
