"Faithful over a few things"

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

In the book of Daniel we read of the four youths who were among those chosen for future service to their country. Royal food and special teaching were ordered for them that they might be prepared to take their place later among the wise men.

These youths, however, not wishing to be unfaithful to the strict requirements of their religion regarding food, requested that they be excused from this regimen, and permitted to prove themselves. As a result, at the end of the specified period it was found that they were "fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat." and, further, that "God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom" (Dan. 1:15, 17).

Because they had proved themselves faithful, three of these youths—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego—in later years courageously endured the trial in the fiery furnace without harm, and Daniel, the fourth, was enabled to come forth from the den of lions unharmed. Faithful in small problems, they were made conquerors over larger ones.
