Christian Science was called to...
Christian Science was called to my attention many years ago by my beloved stepmother, a student of this Science, who brought such an abundance of love and joy into our home that I determined some day to take up the study of this beautiful religion. Many years passed and I forgot completely about the matter until about seventeen years ago, when suddenly I found myself confronted with two kinds of extreme heart trouble resulting in a severe physical breakdown. So aggressive were these conditions that total collapse seemed inevitable.
After being attended by three physicians, one of whom was a specialist, for a considerable length of time without success, I finally dispensed with the use of all medicines and turned wholeheartedly to Christian Science for healing. The healings were slow, but as I look back I am glad, for during the process of treatment I was able to lay off the habits of coffee and tea drinking, as well as social drinking and other negative traits. At this point I should like to express deep and sincere gratitude to my loving wife, who, although not interested in Christian Science, never tired of reading Mrs. Eddy's writings to me.
After I received my healing my great desire was to identify myself with a branch church. Since one of the requirements was total abstinence from the use of tobacco, I was precluded from repaying through membership some of the debt which I felt that I owed to Christian Science. I was then smoking upwards of fifty cigarettes a day. I tried repeatedly to break this habit, but I finally resigned myself to the fate of a confirmed addict. I consoled myself with the thought that after over thirty-five years of smoking, the habit did not hurt me anyway, and I could at least continue to attend church services and read the Lesson-Sermon.
