Sunday School Observations

Armed only with a great desire to be obedient to Mrs. Eddy's instructions in Article XX, Section 3, of the Church Manual, that "the first lessons of the children should be the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17). the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13), and its Spiritual Interpretation by Mary Baker Eddy, Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3-12)," a young student of Christian Science looked into the faces of the children in her first regular Sunday school class. A sweet smile from a tiny girl of three and a radiance shining from a little boy's eyes greeted her, and an understanding of Jesus' words, "Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:14), washed away the fear of failure that had been persistently in her thought. This desire to be obedient to the rules Mrs. Eddy has so lovingly given us proved to be the source of growth for the teacher and the children.

The children loved to curl up their little fists, and holding up one tiny finger, answer, "One God," to the teacher's question, "How many Gods are there?"

The next question was, "And how many Commandments are there?" This time both little hands came up widespread and the answer was, "Ten 'Mandments." When the new teacher found that they loved to be able to answer questions, she always asked to whom God gave the Commandments, where Moses went to get them, what they were written on, and why.
