Spiritual Evidence

The word "testimony" has for its derivation the Latin word testis, meaning "a witness," so Webster tells us in the dictionary which bears his name; and he defines "testimony" as "a solemn declaration or affirmation made to establish or prove some fact." What is this fact that the Christian Scientist sets out to prove when he rises to speak at a Wednesday meeting? To what divine event does he seek to bear witness?

The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, states dearly (p. 207): "The spiritual reality is the scientific fact in all things. The spiritual fact, repeated in the action of man and the whole universe, is harmonious and is the ideal of Truth." The Wednesday meetings have for their purpose the giving of evidence which will reveal the spiritual origin of man, and the benefits, in health, happiness, and success, which result from understanding this truth.

The beneficiaries of spiritual healing desire to give evidence of the transforming power of Truth in every phase of human experience. This evidence sometimes startles the stranger; it inspires the worker in Christian Science, uplifts the congregation generally, glorifies God, and bears witness to the understanding of true being. It shows how the discordant beliefs of mankind can be overcome and replaced with the government of divine Mind, and illustrates in some degree the healing mission of Christ Jesus.
