"Peace, be still"

The familiar story of Jesus and the disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee yields many a lesson. When the wind and waves seemed about to sink the boat, the disciples in their panic turned for help to Jesus, who was sleeping "in the hinder part of the ship." Their plea, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" implied a criticism of his seeming indifference to the situation which confronted them. Jesus was not indifferent. He knew the powerlessness and unreality of error. This was proved when, through his understanding of God, he calmed the sea with the declaration, "Peace, be still."

Jesus gave his command from the standpoint of positive truth. As a result of his spiritual understanding of God and man, the master Christian showed men the way to harmonious living and demonstrated the way to attain it. He not only stilled the tempest, but also healed disease, walked on the sea, and raised the dead, thereby proving that harmony can be attained. God is omnipotent; He is unchanging Truth. The curative power as demonstrated by Jesus can neither be reversed nor be superseded by another so-called power; nor can it be lost.

Christian Science is the reestablishment of Jesus' method of spiritual healing. Mary Baker Eddy dispelled the mist in which this healing had been obscured, and presented the Science of Christ Jesus' teachings to the world in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Students of this Science are proving in their own experiences her statement (ibid., p. 506): "Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace."
