What Is Cause to You?

The only effective way to overcome anything that is wrong is to find out what causes the wrong and correct it. Our bank account may not balance, and we must search out the mistake in addition or subtraction. There may be a feeling of friction with a neighbor, and we need to erase a misunderstanding. The family car will not start, and someone must find the mechanical difficulty and remedy it. So it is a simple everyday truth that when something goes wrong the thing to do is to find out what is causing the wrong and correct it.

Sometimes men have not found it easy to find out just what causes the wrong conditions that have plagued and pursued them, and so have been unable to correct them. For instance, mortals usually do not know what causes them to have a cold. So while they wish to get rid of the condition as one that is wrong and unpleasant, they are at a loss as to how to do so because they do not understand what causes it.

Christian Science is bringing to light the simple and important fact that all that is wrong in human existence—sickness, sin, friction, despondency, discouragement, selfishness, and all the rest—is traceable to mortals' mistaken belief that there exists an evil, mortal mind. This negative mind, they believe, evolves wrong conditions and qualities, claims that we have a material identity, evolved through material processes, to which this trouble-making so-called mind can affix all sorts of wrong, negative conditions, whether we will or no.
