Sunday School Observations

Bible Teaching

Just what place do Bible history and geography have in the work of the Christian Science Sunday School teacher? This is a question which is frequently asked.

Our Leader. Mary Baker Eddy, has provided in the Church Manual (Art. XX. Sect. 2) that "the Sabbath School children shall be taught the Scriptures." She has further provided (Sect. 3) that "the instruction given by the children's teachers must not deviate from the absolute Christian Science contained in their textbook." The Scriptures must therefore be presented to the children in their spiritual import as elucidated in our textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Our beloved Leader has written (ibid., p. 241). "Take away the spiritual signification of Scripture, and that compilation can do no more for mortals than can moonbeams to melt a river of ice."

The "first lessons" and the "next lessons." as defined in the Church Manual, are based on the Bible. Scriptural teaching must bear a direct relationship to the spiritual lesson which is being taught. In teaching the Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, as given on pages 16 and 17 of Science and Health, and the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons the teacher finds opportunities to acquaint pupils with many Scriptural narratives and illuminating passages. Thus the spiritual significance of the Bible is unfolded and its treasures are brought to light.
