Physical scientists maintain that if it were possible to eliminate all friction, a machine would never wear out. Through the wise use of lubricants they have in many instances been able to reduce friction to a minimum, thereby increasing the efficiency and prolonging the usefulness of their appliances.
One is sometimes surprised at the improvement brought about by the use of only one drop of oil in a mechanical contrivance. A stubborn piston may move, a watch may begin to run again, a grinding noise may be eliminated. In the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy defines "oil" (p. 592) thus:Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration."
