Employment
One great obstacle to progress in the world today is the apparent inability of employers and employees in all branches of industry to reach a satisfactory agreement regarding the correct evaluation of employment. In spite of earnest and frequently impartial efforts on the part of legal, industrial, and financial groups to find a solution to this perplexing problem, it must be admitted that there has been little notable evidence of success.
Should we review our experiences in the comparatively recent past, we should discover scarcely a gleam of encouragement that business in general is being laid on a solid foundation. For instance, such conditions as depression, unemployment, and a marked curtailment of purchasing power prevailed at a time when dairy and farm products were abundant, when store shelves literally bulged with salable merchandise, and when industrial plants stood ready to manufacture practically any commodity that might prove marketable. Today, instead of the comparative peace that accompanied the cycle of depression, we find ourselves in the midst of global warfare, and though employment is available in most branches of industry, and wages in general are high, yet products for the home are hard to secure.
While it cannot be ignored that extremes such as these keep the entire problem of employment out of balance, we need to be correspondingly aware that such conditions are not peculiar to our age, but have existed in one form or another since the industrial revolution of the eighteenth century. It is essential that we awaken to the utter inability of the human mind to provide a real solution to its own problems, for this will tend to turn us humbly and unreservedly to God for enlightenment. The means for discerning the way comes through the study of the Bible in conjunction with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which, as its name implies, unlocks the hidden treasures of Truth.
