Demonstration and Fruition

Throughout the writings of Mary Baker Eddy is found comforting assurance that Christian Science heals, and that now, as in the time of Jesus, it is possible, through the power of God, to heal quickly and completely. She writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 55), "The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing."

Christ Jesus' absolute faith in the healing power of Truth was, the result of his marvelous understanding of the Science of being, the truth about God and man's relation to Him. It was this spiritual understanding which gave him authority. He expected his realization of Christ, Truth, and his denial of material sense testimony to have instantaneous results. To the impotent man waiting to be put into the pool, he said, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." To the woman who was held in bondage with a physical deformity for eighteen years, he simply said, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity," and immediately she was healed. "Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole," he said to the woman with an issue of blood for many years. To the lame, the blind, the deaf, the leper—to all those who had faith and asked to be healed—he spoke the Word, and immediately they were healed, and even the dead were raised to life again.

The same spiritual law of divine Love which gave Jesus his authority over sin, disease, and death, is available to all those who adhere to divine Principle and are deeply desirous of healing, blessing, and glorifying God with continuous, harmonious, fruitful activity. Constant watchfulness, prayer, unselfed love, humility, and purification of thought are requisite when Christian Scientists are called, through God's love, to the service of Spirit in the tender ministry of healing. The Christian Scientist who would heal the sick by spiritual means must be conscious of an ever-growing love for God and for mankind and maintain this in his consciousness, in order that positive, fruitful work may be done. Good work well done is never in vain, and every conscientious treatment given in Christian Science will evidence, in some degree, God's omnipotence and omnipresence in the elimination of that which is ungodlike and in the establishment of the Christ-activity.
