During the first World War, I...

During the first World War, I suffered a nervous breakdown. For two years I was unable to follow my employment and was pensioned as unfit. Somehow I could not accept the medical verdict. I was certain that somewhere a cure existed. I had proved several times the efficacy of prayer both for myself and for those I loved. Not then having heard of Christian Science, I went the rounds of allopathy, magnetic healing, and last of all homeopathy. This last treatment helped me at the time, and after an examination by my employer's doctor I was given light work.

Soon after I resumed work, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me. I saw then that I could not continue to work without more understanding of God and His idea, man, than I possessed. The statements which seemed most practical to me at the time are the following, to be found on page 373: "Establish the scientific sense of health, and you relieve the oppressed organ. The inflammation, decomposition, or deposit will abate, and the disabled organ will resume its healthy functions."

Since my healing in Christian Science over twenty years ago, I have gone steadily forward. My work with my employers continued until I finished my time with them and was duly superannuated. Trials have been met, the smoking and drinking habits overcome, and a different life has unfolded in accordance with Mrs. Eddy's statement (ibid., p. 128), "A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man."
