It is with joy and gratitude I give thanks for the light which guided me to Christian Science. I was brought up to love the Bible, but after years of unanswered queries as to why inharmony and unhappiness appeared to prevail in the world, I turned from religion.

Some years passed without any gleam in the ever-increasing mist of dejection and despair. Then the desire to turn to the God whom I had known and depended upon in my youth became so forceful that it was undeniable. Whilst seeking for a church that would help me in my quest I was led through a friend whose need had been met in Christian Science, to commence the study of the Lesson-Sermon and to attend a Christian Science service.

Since beginning the study of this religion I have experienced many proofs of God's love and protecting care. I was healed of the smoking habit very early in my journey from sense to Soul, and without any particular effort or work on my part. This false desire just faded out of my experience, and for this freedom I am increasingly grateful. Another healing which caused me to rejoice in the ever-operative power of Christian Science was that of a sprained ankle. I was on holiday in the Lake District, and whilst running down a steep slope injured my ankle. For a few seconds, amidst the pain and sense of helplessness, I sat on the fellside and contemplated the situation. As I sat, the words of one of our hymns filled my consciousness (Hymn No. 139):
