In the spring of 1939 I found...

In the spring of 1939 I found myself in a desperate physical and mental state, suffering from heart palpitation, painful breathing, strangulation, despondency, and general debility. These conditions carried with them an almost constant thought of death that terrorized me to the point of hysteria and an apathetic willingness to die out of my troubles.

To add to my fears, an examining physician declared there was no drug he could give me to relieve the heart distress, because I was also suffering from a severe nervous breakdown, which demanded the attention of the best specialist I could find. This so convinced me of the imminence of death that I felt I must make a last-minute effort to learn something about God and make my peace with Him before passing on.

I owned a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which, with the Bible, had been locked in a bookcase for a period of ten years, while the selfish pursuit of worldly things claimed my attention. In the hour of my extremity I turned to this precious volume and began to read, though I was too weak to hold the book for more than a few minutes at a time.
