Dependence on God

J. Arthur West Journal & Bulletin Providence, Rhode Island

A few years ago a research student, exploring the life of Lincoln, uncovered a most interesting fact about the Gettysburg Address.

The researcher found in his study of that document that its present version contains a significant amendment that did not appear in earlier scribbled notes which its author made as he prepared to talk. In the first draft, the Great Emancipator had written "that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom." Then as he rode to Gettysburg and reflected upon his speech, that sentence seemed to him to lack something. He thought of an insertion, wrote it into the manuscript, and used it when he made his public remarks. He added only two words—"under God"—but they make all the difference.
