For many years there has come...

For many years there has come to me, as a student of Christian Science, an abundance of blessings for which I am sincerely grateful to God. My appreciation is ever renewed when I recall the following experience.

One morning about four years ago, while going to my office, I fell down a flight of stairs and was unable to get up, having struck my right ankle with such force that, although I did not realize it at the time, it was fractured. Two women offered to help me, and fortified by a statement from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I walked up two flights of stairs and on to my office building. On reaching the office I sat down and accomplished my day's work, although the pain was great and the ankle became increasingly swollen.

After work my husband assisted me to the car and we drove home, where I went directly to my room and prayed throughout the night. From Science and Health came these words (p. 227): "Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: 'Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!' Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your divine right. The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being." The phrase, "entangled your free limbs," stood out in this text. I knew that my life was not in matter, that man's life is God, and that in this fact lay escape "from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!" I fell asleep, and after four hours awakened to subdued pain. My office duties were conducted as usual, and in one week I was wholly free.
