"The wisdom and the occasion"

How often are we tempted, in times of difficulty or sickness, to ask, "Why should this condition be visited upon me?" Indeed, it might sometimes seem that evil endeavors to force itself on our attention, in the form of sickness or in some other discordant guise, when we have been most earnestly striving, through the study and application of Christian Science, to make progress Spiritward.

Yet, if one turns to the Bible— that great storehouse of the experience of men who faced problems and disasters similar to those we are encountering today—we find comfort in the many accounts of victory over error, won by a steady and consecrated effort to overcome apparent evil by application of the law of God.

Such instances as Daniel in the den of lions, the Hebrew men in the furnace, Joseph when sold into slavery, Peter when cast into prison, are typical. A close study of these incidents shows that these inspired characters did not bemoan their fate, or become resentful that, despite their efforts to obey God's commands, they found themselves in such a position. No, they accepted the trial as an occasion to prove still further the power and presence of God.
