Testimonies

"Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God." These words from Isaiah are echoed elsewhere in the Bible, emphasizing the importance of our understanding their significance. One dictionary definition of "witness" is, "That which serves as or furnishes evidence, or proof." Anyone, therefore, who has experienced the healing power of Christian Science, whether it be physically, mentally, morally, or financially, is a witness to the truth regarding God and man.

In order that our gratitude for such blessings may be expressed outside the limited circle of family and friends, our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, under divine guidance, made provision for the giving of testimonies at our Wednesday evening meetings and in our periodicals (see Church Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 24). This provision gives Christian Scientists an opportunity to share the healings they have experienced in the overcoming of sin or disease through their study and application of this practical religion. We often find that the very expression of our gratitude increases our own joy and appreciation of the truth which makes men free.

Sometimes we find, however, that false suggestions, such as fear, self-consciousness, the tendency to let those who are more experienced do the talking, are keeping us in our seats on Wednesday evenings. Perhaps we feel that our demonstrations, because of their simplicity, would not be of sufficient help or interest to others. Few there are who do not feel encouraged when they hear of others' triumph over the "little foxes," such as impatience, flashes of temper, thoughtless speech, gossip, criticism, mental or physical laziness, and selfishness. Such overcoming brings progress, for the solution of these problems makes us stronger and increases our spiritual understanding. Jesus, in his well-known parable of the talents, praised fidelity to one's highest concept of good in everyday living. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," says the lord in the parable, "thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."
