"How can mechanism be automatic?"

Many are under the false impression that there is such a thing as complete mechanical or electrical automatism, that is, self-action or self-regulation. It would seem that the electric eye, the electric refrigerator, even the old-time water wheel and modern turbine are entirely automatic, but this is not true. The completely automatic machine is an inventor's dream, a figure of fancy, without life or intelligence, for soul-less mechanism cannot create itself, start itself, or regulate itself. Without so-called mortal mind the mechanical structure is inert and motionless.

"If Mind is the only actor, how can mechanism be automatic?" asks Mary Baker Eddy on page 399 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Here is an arresting question which, when answered correctly, will enable you to prove your God-given dominion over mechanism, for God has given man dominion "over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

A student of Christian Science proved this for himself after he had been put in charge of a manufacturing plant about which he knew very little. The operations were far from satisfactory because the machinery was run-down and inadequate, and frequent breakdowns of equipment were causing further complications in processes involving high temperature and heavy machinery. He was at a loss which way to turn, and therefore sought enlightenment in Christian Science.
