When I was just beginning to...

When I was just beginning to study Science, a beloved practitioner quoted this statement to me from "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 149, 150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee." This was an uplifting, inspiring thought at that time, but as I gain understanding, it grows more uplifting and inspiring.

In December, 1941, I was struck by a car and thrown into the air. I was unconscious for four hours, yet was able to request that a practitioner be called before I was taken to the hospital. Here they took X rays, and put a cast on one ankle and leg. A few minutes after I regained consciousness the practitioner walked into the room. At my surprised question as to who had called her, she informed me that I had kept them calling her five or six times throughout the experience. My heart sang for joy. I realized that we never have to get along without Christian Science, and that God is always available.

The doctor's report was: a very bad concussion, a spinal injury, a broken ankle with the heel broken loose from the foot, an injured thumb, and head injuries. He said I should have to wear the cast six weeks, and that it would take me another six weeks to learn to walk. That night I asked the nurse to call the practitioner, for the ankle was very painful. In ten minutes I was able to rest, and the ankle felt healed. I left the hospital on the following morning, and was back at work in six weeks. At no time was I confined to bed. The concussion and spinal injuries were instantaneously healed. Evidence of blood poisoning in the arm was overcome.
