I began to smoke tobacco when...

I began to smoke tobacco when I was a boy, and continued for about fifty years. When I became interested in Christian Science and wanted to join a Christian Science church, I was told that in order to do so I must discontinue the use of tobacco. I could not understand why. I was a moderate smoker, not using tobacco to excess, and could see no ill effect from it.

The question of being able to discontinue the use of tobacco did not bother me, but why should I discontinue it? I pondered this question for many months.

My application for membership in a branch church was turned down. I was told by the membership committee to continue my studies. I continued reading Mrs. Eddy's books and the literature and attended the services. One Sunday at the close of the church service, when the First Reader read this verse (I John 3:3). "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure," the thought came to me, Of what should I purify myself? The answer stood out before me like the handwriting on the wall: Tobacco.
