Shortening the Distance

As one looks ahead into the future and considers the legion of complex problems that await solution before a better world order can appear, the challenge is both grave and stimulating. The demand is imperative. There can be no evasion. We must meet the challenge, never retreat from it. Great courage is an essential element in the winning of the war. Greater and longer-enduring courage will be needed to win and cement a God-sanctioned peace—a mental citadel for earth's family, fortified against fratricidal strife.

There will be a better world. The irresistible forces of the Mind that is God, working unceasingly in the consciousness of men, demand it. Divine intelligence is not content with things as they have been. Intelligence is forcing us to find life and man as they truly are, and are divinely destined to be. So certain was Christ Jesus of the truth of his God-inspired teaching that he said, "One jot and one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." One of the mandates of this law he stated thus: "There shall be one fold, and one shepherd." The appearing of the "one fold, and one shepherd" draws daily nearer in the degree that the infinite allness of the Mind that is God, good, is realized by you and me.

Mortals often believe that in some unexplainable way their lot will be improved by forces of which they know little. Blind hope, belief in chance, and a not-understood Deity, encourage this unreasoned view. Christian Science teaches that humanity's betterment can come, not through ignorant belief, but through individual improvement; that a better world will be the externalization of the better thinking of us all. It will not come from worse thinking, and it cannot come from no thinking.
