Like many others who have felt...
Like many others who have felt the healing power of Christian Science, I wish to express my gratitude for what this Science has done for me and my home during the past twenty years.
I was born in a European country, and attended a Sunday school where I was told that God knows everything and sees everything at all times. As I grew older I realized that God was not a person who could be touched or seen with our physical senses; nevertheless, I accepted the pastor's explanation of the Bible and always held a great respect for the churches and their activities.
In 1920 Christian Science was mentioned in our home, and my brother-in-law gave us a French edition of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time my wife was in great need of physical help, but the textbook was not read, and lay on the table for about a year. Then my wife was suddenly taken ill again, and she decided to try Christian Science. I helped her walk to the home of a practitioner; and after we had exchanged a few words a treatment was given and we were told to go home. As we reached the sidewalk my wife was able to walk alone. She had been healed instantaneously. This was enough proof for us to investigate further this healing power.
Through the study of the Christian Science textbook and with the help of a practitioner I was healed of the smoking habit and of a serious stomach ailment. A few years ago there was labor trouble in the factory where I was working. During this time I endeavored to see man as perfect, and, holding to this concept, I was never molested.
One day while I was at work trying to remove a broken steel pin from a machine, it suddenly came out and struck me in the eye, and I fell backward with the piece of steel in the eye. I removed it, got up, placed another pin in the machine and told the man at the machine to carry on. After washing the eye, I returned to work knowing and declaring to myself that nothing could interfere with true vision; that since I was God's image and likeness, I had perfect vision, which could not be destroyed. When I reached home that evening I washed the injured eye, and discovered that the eyeball was cut and the eye was red. That evening I drove sixty miles to attend a gathering of friends and then agreed to return two days later to spend the week end with them.
On Saturday the eye was still very red, and as we drove along my loving wife declared the truth about man. By the time we reached our destination my eye was completely healed. During this period there was no sense of pain or fear, nor did my superiors try to influence me to take medical treatment. This occurred seven years ago, and my eyesight has never been impaired.
In the beginning it was very difficult for my wife and me to read the textbook, but the practitioner told us that the study of the Bible and of Science and Health was necessary to become a loyal Christian Scientist and to keep the blessings we had received. So we went to work, and read one paragraph in English, then in French on the next page, then back in English, until we understood the meaning of the passage. Our progress was slow, but always rewarded. When the desire came for us to join a Christian Science branch church my antagonism for the orthodox churches and their ways left me entirely. I had found a church that was used for worship only, a church which is doing the work that Jesus did; that is, healing the sick, casting out fear and sins, and teaching men how to love their neighbors.
During the past ten years I have gained a better understanding of man's relationship to God. Through this understanding pestilence was removed from our home overnight, and burns and broken bones have been healed without surgical help. During the years of depression, employment was found and our need was always met with abundance.
I am grateful to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered divine Principle, the same wonderful Principle by which Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. I am grateful for class instruction, grateful for the opportunity to serve in the activities of the Christian Science movement, and that my little understanding of divine Principle enable me to help others in freeing themselves from erroneous beliefs. I hope that I shall always be worthy to work for the Cause of Christian Science.—Peter Hunkeler, Detroit, Michigan.
